- Mary J Blige Premieres New Song “Mighty River” from The Motion Picture “Mudbound” Soundtrack
- American period drama film "Mudbound" was released on November 17, 2017. Directed by Dee Rees, starring Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, and Mary J. Blige.
Before the film release, American singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige has released a new song "Mighty River" from the soundtrack of "Mudbound". She played as Florence Jackson in the film.
It is the end-title song of the film. The soundtrack was scored by New York-based American rock singer-songwriter Tamar-kali.
This marks she composed the songs for the first time for the film.
About the soundtrack, Tamar-kali said;
The score comes from an emotional place, a scenic place. Dee Rees talked about the physicality of the mud, and how I might present that in the compositions, the sound of the farm, which was almost like a character in the film.
Director Dee Rees added;
"Ancestors. Dark strings. My hope for this score is that it would sound like it bubbled up from the earth, that it was ‘in the trees,’ and would simultaneously evoke the indifference of nature and the resilience of humanity. Tamar-kali did just that. She made the rocks cry out. The result is not period-connected in any way. 'Mudbound Theme' provides the only taste of the blues in the score. Everything else is a bare chamber ensemble with a new classical vibe.”
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Hillary Jordan. The novel follows the lives of two families one black, one white on a Mississippi cotton farm in 1946. Principal photography began in May 2016 in Louisiana. The film was premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2017.
